A "green" death with mushroom burial suits

Imagine if nothing that died decayed…ever. The Earth would get very full, very quick, wouldn’t it? Thankfully this isn’t the case and the little dudes we can be thankful to are called decomposers. They eat anything that dies and poo good stuff back into the soil. And, with mushrooms being the uber decomposer, we’ve decided to make them into burial suits to decompose ourselves.

The suit, to be presented at New York Fashion week, is designed to make death more environmentally friendly. You’d think it’s already pretty green, and it is. But, the popular methods we use to deal with dead bodies are less so. One cremation uses the same energy as a 500 mile car journey. And, it may keep you looking fresh, but embalming isn’t much better. Using a concoction of powerful chemicals like formaldehyde, we risk contaminating our water with this cancer causing chemical. The mushroom suit solves this by banishing the bad and using only the natural principles of decay that mother nature provides free.

The key factors involved in decay are good levels of oxygen, water and temperature (too much or too little of any of these things aren’t a great recipe), alongside some microorganisms (tiny creatures like bacteria). Our new mushroom suit uses a perfected mix of mushrooms and microorganisms to break down the body. It’s not exactly Tutankhamun’s solid gold death mask, but it’s good for the environment. So, if you like to think yourself green, get your orders in now (they also cater for pets). Prices start at $1,500.
